Brass mouthpiece changing color?

I left my mellophone mouthpiece on my desk (standing on its rim). It hasnt been standing in direct sunlight or anything, but the outside is beginning to have a gold/yellow color. The rim, the part that's been on my desk, is still silver. This never happened before during marching season or when it was in my case for long periods of time.
Why is this? How can I change it back?

Brass mouthpieces are generally silver-plated. To restore the original finish, use a good quality silver polish that is recommended for silverware. This way you can be assured it is safe to use in the mouth area.

There are several reasons this tarnish could occur. Among those are changes in the environmental humidity. These are changes of a fairly sustained length of time. For example, going outside and playing the horn on a humid summer day and then retreating to the AC is really not going to be noticeable; however, moving to an island with the horn and living in a temperate non- air conditioned environment means increased exposure to humidity.

Another possible reason can be changes in your body chemistry. For example, it is similar to the fact that pimples are generally associated with adolescents but not prevalent, in general, with the adult population due to differences in body chemistry. So the discoloration you see may reflect changes in your body.

It is also possible if your diet has changed, this may be evidence. For example if there is a significant increase or decrease in acids (such as fruits, veggies, or their juices) your saliva/breath may interact with the metal plating on the mouthpiece.

I hope this is helpful. Most likely this occurs because of an occurrence not previously considered.
