What's the grading scale for music?

I keep hearing people say that their a level 6 flute student or something like that. There some people that say that this music is so hard it's level eight or whatever... How do I find out my level? I'm taking Certificate of Merit and I'm doing level 6 playing flute... does that mean I'm a level six or what?

The grading levels are different all over the world. You will hear Brits talk about ABRSM levels - perhaps one of them will explain this in more detail for you. I am a teacher and competition judge, in NY state, so I know the NYSSMA ( New York State School Music Association) rubrics, standards, and Manual ( listing of solos) inside-out - at least in those areas that I need ( woodwinds, especially flute, and voice and piano - other areas I judge). I have also been on the committee to revise the flute section, so I compared it to some of the listings around the world. Each state in the US has their own system - a few of them use something they have borrowed from another state - why re-invent the wheel?

Beyond choosing a solos form a certain level on a certain list, you need to fulfill the other requirements; there are always scales to be played, up to a certain number of sharps and flat in early level, and at certain tempos or groupings (triplets, sixteenths, etc.) and a certain amount of octaves, etc. Some states require minor scales - some do not. And most "solo annd ensemble festivals" or competitions require sight-reading, too - this is an area that MANY students struggle with.

So - just because you go thru your state or country's manual, and can learn a solo from a certain level, does not mean you ARE that level a player. I could learn an opera aria from Level 6 - and you would CRINGE to hear ME sing it! It is all about the *standards* being harder, too - what is nice tone for a Level 1 is unacceptable for a Level 4 - perhaps, no vibrato, limited use of color, etc. I tell my students that the judges *increase the microscope power* at each level. The grade you are in SCHOOL makes no difference - I get band directors who will send in a 12 -year-old who has somehow beat a difficult piece into their fingers, and their other parameters are not up to Level 6 standards - they are sending that kid to a BIG disappointment. I have to judge according to the standards, not "You mean you are only 12? Aren't you just the cutest thing!" It cannot matter if they are 12 or 18 - Level 6 ir Level 6 - or whatever level they are on. So even if they are saying "the grade does not matter" - it is still hard to come away from a Level 6 when you are 12, and have gotten a 82, when you SHOULD have played a Level 4 - and gotten a 98.

There are countless other grading systems. Sometimes STORES or online catalogs have their own. The National Flute Association grades music from Level A to Level J. So - I can check my info and tell a student WHICH Level 6 solos are a H, I, or J - sometimes we look for the easier Level 6m and sometimes, for one that is more impressive, and liable to be played by fewer flutists that year - or ever! There are MTNA (Music Teacher National Association) and ASTA (American String Teachers Association); NATS (National Association of Teachers fo Singing) - and many, many more. You d could crazy keeping it ALL straight - most people just pay attention to their OWN needs.

So - sorry there is not ONE answer here - life is complicated - and a musicians' life? - even more so. Good luck with any of these festivals and competitions you might enter - they are VERY good for you!
