what is a good alto sax mouth peice?
so. i just bought a brand new julis keilwerth [[ forgive my spelling]] its called the "shadow" modle Xr 90 or something. well, my band director said i have a great sax and yes, i do, im in love with it but she said all i need is a really good mouth peice. she recommended the C* or something... is this any good? or is it some stupid student modle? whats a professional one thats known as a really good mouth peice?
The Selmer C* is the "standard" saxopone mouthpiece that a lot of people use. It is versatile in that it can play both classical and jazz without any issues at all with tone not working. It is also pretty much taught to music teachers (who are not saxophonists) to recommend it because it is just a standard. That doesn't mean it is the mouthpiece that will work for what you want.
Now on to that mouthpiece working for you. While the C* is a good mouthpiece, there is a good chance that another mouthpiece will give you a better tone for your tastes or needs. That is why there are THOUSANDS of different makes and models of mouthpieces out there. If you are serious about finding a mouthpiece, you first need to know what tone you are trying to achieve with the mouthpiece. This is the issue with the band director recommending is that if you like the tone, and don't know any better about what tone you are aiming for, you are going in blind and you will probably buy a mouthpiece that isn't the best choice for you or what tone you need.
If you don't already have a private lesson teacher, get one. They can do a much better job of analyzing your tone, what needs to improve, and describe or teach you what tone you are needing. Since most lesson teachers teach in a store, have them go get a bunch of different mouthpieces and have you try them. Even try two or three different C* mouthpieces as they are mass produced so there can be small changes that you won't see, but will affect the tone and responsiveness of the mouthpiece. Take your time. Play it in all dynamic ranges, the full range of the mouthpiece, and doing the same thing for each mouthpiece. If you do not take lessons in a store, schedule some time with your teacher where you and your teacher can go to different stores that have different mouthpieces for you to try. Try as many as possible.
If you will notice, nowhere in this do I recommend one mouthpiece as better than another by name. The reason is that everyone is different, and will like different things. I will gladly tell you what I play, but I won't say it is better or worse for you or for anyone else as you may or may not like it. Also, people can recommend all they want, but if you don't have access to that mouthpiece, what good does the recommendation do you?
I went mouthpiece shopping last spring. I went to at least five different stores, and tried over 30 mouthpieces. I found one that not a single person recommended, yet it gave me the tone I wanted. So that means I spent hours reading peoples recommendations, only to find about 1/2 of the mouthpieces people recommended, and to find that not a single one was the one that I liked.
