What is the proper way to clean the neck on an alto saxophone?

I've been playing for 4+ years and recently bought a "saxophone neck swab" from a local music store (I have previously been cleaning it with just a small cloth but decided to get something better). The first time i pulled it through the soft part that is supposed to clean it snapped off and got stuck. I got it out but what is a good way to clean the inside of the neck.

I know there a bunch a different types of swabs, but they are pointless. The best way to clean the neck is by using a swab that you use for the rest of your instument, you may also have a mouth piece brush. Also, if it is the octave that is the problem, you can bend a paperclip and just stick it the octave hole.
