What is the difference between soft, medium, and hard oboe reeds?
I've been playing the Oboe for about a year and my teacher always ordered the reeds for us and they were all medium soft. She said that those were for beginners and hard ones are for more experienced.

I make my own reeds so I know a tad about oboe reeds...
"Soft" reeds are easy to play because there is less cane on the reed, but tend to be obnoxious because the reeds will vibrate more (you will really need your lips to control the sound of the reed) and it will sound like a typical beginning oboe student (somewhere between a duck and a kazoo).
"Hard" reeds are harder to play because they have more cane on them and offer more resistance to the air you are pushing through the reed. They will offer a more controlled and stable sound. The problem is, your lips will get tired a lot quicker, and as a result your tone will be very bad because of this.
And as you can guess "Medium" is somewhere in between soft and hard.
As a rule I always try to play on the hardest reed I can without getting tired. As you play oboe more and more, the muscles around the mouth will become stronger and you will gradually be able to play on harder and harder reeds, and your tone will get more refined and controlled, and you will sound like a true oboe player!
