Is it common practice for a manager to have their secretary set up job interviews?
I wonder sometimes if managers are extremely busy. A couple of managers are wanting me to schedule numerous interviews for job candidates over the next two weeks. On top of that they want me to be the person escorting them as well. Does this happen a lot? If they really wanted someone to come on board so badly, couldn't they do some of this themselves?
It's common practice. The function of the secretary or PA is to support the manager. Since managers are usually paid more than secretaries, it makes good economic sense for managers to devolve some functions to their secretaries and save their own time for specialist management work.
It's more usual for an interviewer or interview panel to wait in the interview room, and for the interviewee to be escorted there by someone who is not involved in the interview. This gives a more professional impression, and reduces the possibility of coaching on interview questions, favouritism or bias.
Some secretaries welcome any extra duties, and ask to get more involved in the HR and recruitment process so that they can learn and advance their careers.
