How does alto mouth piece sizing effect sound?
When buying a mouth piece for alto sax, how do the numbers (measurements?) effect the mouthpiece.
Ex) the differene between an Otto Link Option 6 vs Option 8
The difference is usually (though not always) because of the mouthpiece facing (space between reed tip and mouthpiece tip). First understand that a 6 on an otto link is not the same as a 6 on say a Meyer or Runyon. The numbers are not standardized (as some manufacturers use numbers, others use letters, and then we get we get the wonderful symbols like stars, two stars, etc). Below is a link with a chart of facings. The other differences can be in the different angles of the baffles, the type of tone chamber (round or square), and the length of the facing. The second link is one manufacturer's information about the different parts of the mouthpiece and what changes they can make.
