What are the all-time most annoying instruments or techniques?
I hate sprechstimme with a passion. Many people whine about bagpipes, but I actually like them- maybe because they have that whole Scottish Highlands feel. I can't think of much worse than the hurdy-gurdy:
It doesn't sound quite as bad as I remembered in music history class, but it's still pretty screechy! What are the worst?
What is wrong with recorders? Clearly you have never heard a good recorder. (Totally recommend Vivaldis recorder/flautino concerti!)
Ok, I REALLY, REALLY, HATE THE HURDY GURDY!!!!! ok, I dont hate it that much, but it has a very irritating sound, like a buzzing. Its like fluttered tonguing on brass instruments. Gross sounding. (Although I have heard one very beautiful hurdy gurdy piece. It was awesome!) But yeah the hurdy gurdy is the most awful sounding instrument.. I guy I know plays one just because it pisses off our teacher.
I also hate the tin-whistle.
And I also like Bag Pipes... I prefer the Uillean pipes, but both are nice.

Hafwen, I have heard the hurdy gurdy played well... I just dont like the constant buzzing sound that it produces. Although, the person I know who plays hurdy gurdy, he removed one of the strings (the one that isnt affected by the keyboard) and it sounded wonderful! but as of yet, he is the only person I've heard who has done that...
As for the tin whistle, I guess it is strange that I dont like it, as I do like other instruments that are similar to it. I think the reason I dont like it is more an association than the instrument itself. ( a "friend" put her tin whistle by my ear and blew as hard as she could... I think my ear was damaged more by that than by listening to an ipod)
