Price of vintage Henri Selmer Paris Bb Clarinet?
My parents purchased this clarinet for me in 1977 new, it's a Series 9 with matching serial numbers(X1706). I'm curious as to what this may be worth at this time. It is in mint condition.
This is the "centered tone" model with straight-cut tone holes and a cylindrical bore, creating a "strong" tone, but the intonation is not reliable. It emerged in the 1960s - I could not find your serial number to accurately date the manufacturing year of the horn.
The brand and model is still readily accessible, so the value will be based on the condition of the horn. If it hasn't seen any action within the past five years, it will likely need some work whether or not it still looks good. Keys and springs can freeze, and pads can deteriorate - I believe the Series 9 used bladder pads, so if you see any white dust or specs on the clarinet/case, that means the pads may need work.
The best way to find the value is to get the horn appraised by any repair person at a local music shop. This is an intermediate/low line pro horn, so the value will be a little more than the student models - the fact it's wood bumps up value. You can include the cost of the appraisal in the price of your horn, but you must include the receipt and contact info of the person who did the appraisal with the sale.
You have the advantage of Selmer being a reliable brand. If I were to buy this horn, I would offer you about $200, even if it needed a little work.
