Violin Quetsions - Begining?

I am new at violin, and I play many other instruments (guitar, flute, piano, ocarina, saxophone) and I decided I'd try to learn it by myself, so I got some books and decided to rely on my ear.. I'm thinking I'll get a teacher when school begins.
PROBLEM: I was TRYING to teach myself to tune the instrument, didn't work so well, and I tuned it too tight, and I broke my D string.. yes my D string... So my question is how much would it cost to get it replaced (how much do violin strings cost?) and what should I do to make sure that this doesn't happen again..
Other question- how do I properly use the fine tuning peg at the tail of my violin, there's only one?

This is just one of the many reasons one needs a teacher. I'm glad you're planning to get one soon; you might even make a lot better use of your summer time by getting just one or two lessons, even informal ones, say from an advanced student. It would really help to have someone show you, say, how to hold it, etc.

Using Dominant strings (which I recommend as a good basic brand), a D is about $16 ( http://www.sharmusic.com/shop.axd/StringsWorksheet?cid=67&brand_id=449 ). Go ahead and buy enough strings, though, that you have 4 on the violin AND a complete back-up set of 4 (so you don't have to wait to replace one when the next one breaks). They do break, by the way, even if not overtightened, or they wear out and start to unravel. Even treated right, you can expect to replace at least 1-2 per year.

One really helpful tool for tuning would be an electric tuner--something that tells you whether you're too low, too high, or just right. I think one like this would be best for you: http://www.sharmusic.com/Shop-Shar/Accessories/Essentials/Metronomes-Tuners/Shar-3-in-1-Clip-Metronome-and-Tuner.axd ; you can set it to "violin" mode so it only focuses on the four strings, and it's also a metronome (something that keeps a steady beat to help you play in tempo). Again, though, for best results, try to get some teacher or advanced violinist to give you some lessons in tuning. Don't let them just tune it for you, get them to show you how!

For some reason that I've never understood, professional violinists tend to just put a fine tuner on the E string. It seems like a mark of un-professionalism to use them on the other strings. I've never understood this attitude--if it's useful for E, why not for the others? Anyway, I'd recommend getting them on the other 3 strings as well. A local violin shop should be able to do this for you in under $10 and 10 minutes. To use it, turn clockwise to raise the pitch and counterclockwise to lower it. It changes the pitch in *very* small amounts, though, so you only need to use it when you're within one note of the correct pitch. It's useful because the pegs (at the top) change the pitch so much that they can be hard to get it *just* right.

By the way, I have some general advice for beginning violinists at https://sites.google.com/site/bonnerviolin/faq .
