E flat contrabass clarinet (contra alto clarinet)?
OK so my director stuck me on the E flat contrabass clarinet also known as the contra alto clarinet. One problem, i don't know how to read the notes in E flat. I play bass clarinet and i messed around with the contra today and the finger holes are all in the same spot, just that the notes are different. Do i read the E flat part or can i play the B flat part? if i have to play the E flat part, which im fine with, can someone post a website or SOMETHING that will give me a fingering chart??? Please. My director expects me to play tomorrow and i have no idea what im doing!!! HELP!
Thank you so much. all i have to do is stick to my part and play as if i were on bass!
YOU ARE AWESOME!!! And you don't have anything to worry about.
All the notes are the same, as far as you will need to know right now. Your part will already be written in Eb. Just play as if you were the Bass. You WILL need to learn new concert scales though. Bb and Eb are a fifth apart, if that helps. Here's a chart:
Concert Pitch - C - F - Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - Gb - B - E - A - D - G
Bb Pitch - - - - D - G - C - F - Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - Gb - B - E - A
Eb Pitch - - - - A - D - G - C - F - Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - Gb - B - E
I keep a chart like this in my band folder. I can't keep track of all that! The order is of the circle of fifths, because my brain works in that bazaar way.
Have fun on the contra! And don't stress! The worst thing you can do is make demented squeaks (they are so low)!
