Should I Play The Alto Clarinet?
I have been playing the clarinet for over a year now and my teacher is offering me the chance to play alto clarinet because there are 16 clarinets in our class and he wants some specialty instruments so I told him I would think about it and I don't know if I should or not so please help me?
Alto clarinet is a pretty fun instrument to play. It's actually one of my favorites. There really isn't a lot of demand for it any more though. Mostly the alto subs the 3rd or 4th soprano clarinet part (because it has a really strong bottom range) with some limited exposure in the traditional wind band literature. It's also a required voice in clarinet choir music - not that clarinet choirs are all that common.
The alto clarinet and the modern basset horn are almost identical. I once did a side-by-side comparison of present makers and found that most of the present manufacturers of the basset horn are simply making an Alto Clarinet in F (with C extension) and calling it a basset horn. You can play most of the basset horn works on an alto with just a little practice in transposing. You only lose C (written) by using an Eb alto in transposition because it's already a full step below F and has a range to Eb. You don't lose any of the top because we don't play in altisimo register all that much anyway. (I know, TMI - it'll make sense though if you start playing alto seriously)
A true basset horn has a smaller bore and smaller mouthpiece than an alto clarinet. It's also a very scarce and expensive instrument to find. An alto clarinet can be had pretty inexpensively - even a top quality one - on the used market. The Selmer Paris basset has a .621 bore compared to the .668 of the Eb alto. The Yamaha alto is a .673. The Buffet basset horn is a .677 compared to .689 on their alto. Point being that one company's basset bore is anothers alto bore, or that you can get an Eb basset from Selmer or an F alto from Buffet. There will be no real timbre difference between a .673 alto and a .677 basset.
Many band directors hate alto clarinets. It's partly because they've never heard one played well. That's partly because, historically, the alto clarinet players were chosen from the bottom seats of soprano players and not provided any instruction. It's not a soprano and it doesn't handle like one. It's also louder than about 4 or 5 typical sopranos in the hands of a real player. So; if you don't play it well, you'll be heard. If you decide to play alto - put in some time learning to play well so that you don't perpetuate the myth of bad players.
Cool thing you can do with an alto clarinet - you can read the first bassoon part right off the page by just changing the clef to treble and altering the key signature. The advantage to that is that an alto clarinet has much more facility (can play faster easier) than a bassoon. You can do the same trick with bassoon 2 and 3 parts and a EEb contralto clarinet.
I'd also suggest, if you're going to play the alto, that you extend into the entirety of "big clarinets" instead of concentrating on just alto. Bass clarinet is a principal seat and in decent demand. Good contra players are a rarity. Basset horn players are about as scarce as hens teeth. Whereas, soprano players are a dime a dozen. It's pretty easy to move back and forth from alto to bass. I'd say give it a try unless you have your heart set on become a soprano clarinet soloist.
