I inherited a house recently. What should I know regarding house care and maintenance?
This house is about 45 years old, one story, 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom, and completely concrete (even floors). The house is in the Caribbean

Inspectors in the usa are bad enough. I can't imagine how you would find a trustworthy one in the Caribbean unless you talk to some realtors in the area. Codes are not even in existence in most of the Caribbean, so an inspection for that old of a home probably wouldn't do you any good anyway. I would hire a contractor to come in a take a look. They want to do good work to make good money. Talk to realtors in the area and explain your situation. They can help you with finding good people and even renting your property to make you some money. As far as day to day or weekly maintenance, if your not moving there you will most likely have to hire someone to go and take care of it for you. This is very normal in the carribean and there are tons of people and companies that do it. Again talk to a local realtor. You will also need to learn about the weather and how it affects homes there. It is nothing like being in the states. Other than hurricanes and the problems they cause houses in the carribean generally will last a very long time, if they are built well. Your gonna have your hands full for awhile until you get used to having a property that you can't see ever day.
