How can i get our crappy recorder to record the bass!?
In our band, were getting more advanced to the point of recording, were only like 14 and 10 and 15 so we dont have very much money, We Have a little peice of crap recorder, that records the Singing, Drumming, and Guitar PERFECT! But when we try to put bass in it, it like messes with the frequency, we've tryed so much different things to get it to work but all it does is mess up the frequency to the point where it sounds like it "lags" the stuff out, IT RUINS EVERYTHING! and we are so good, this is our only downfall...
LittleDog has one possible answer -- the record may well be using AGC, automatic gain control. AGC is a bit like a slow compressor/expander -- it cranks the recording level when the levels are low, cuts then when they're hot. Of course, if it did this really fast, it would precisely be a compressor/expander, and that's not the idea -- they basically want to set the volume based on where you'd want it based on the average sound level. But when that level goes very non-average, it's a problem.
Of course, another problem is probably that your craptastic recorder has a craptastic microphone. There's a TON of energy in bass sounds.. if you guys have a bass player, he's probably not happy unless he's got 5x as much power in his amp as your guitar player's amp. That's pretty normal, and it's because you need that kind of energy to make good low notes, basically. When recording, you need a similar ability to take that much energy and do something useful with it.
When you hit that poor craptastic mic with your bass, it's tiny diaphram probably hits its limit of movement while the bass volume is still rising... so you get clipping (AGC problems also give you clipping issues, but you can't fix mic-based clipping with your volume controls). Most recording experts (and even guys like me who've done it for 30 years as a hobby) use different mics for recording bass, bass drums, etc.
Actually, would probably use a direct input rig.. I have this USB recording interface for guitars (GuitarPort from Line6), and it's a great way to deal with bass. You're probably trying to do it all in one take ("live in the studio" type stuff), but that's really difficult to do well... I always like multiple takes, or at the least multiple inputs.
If I had to record in the studio, there are two options, neither of which is cheap if you don't have gear lying around. You can run the bass directly into your mixer (assuming you have a mixer), rather than micing it... that'll help quite a bit. If it were me, I'd probably run it through my compressor (I have a dBx 1066) at maybe 3:1 compression with soft limiting. If I miced it, I would use a good string dynamic mic like a AKG D112, something that can really deliver the bass. Some bass recording setups put one mic right at the bass amp (tuned way down) and another about 6-8 ft from the bass amp.. you can get the bass punch from the close mic and more lower frequencies with the far mic.
Of course, you don't have an ideal world. First thing, get your recorder to a fixed recording level if possible (if not, you need a better recorder).. that's the best explanation for "messes with the frequency". Next, make sure your bass is far enough away from the recording mic to not overwhelm it.. that's the next good explanation, as mentioned, for that distortion. You may even need to turn the bass down a bit -- your goal is to get a good sound on tape, it doesn't really matter what it sounds like in the room.
Try moving to a PC for recording if you can. You can start with freeware multitrack recording apps like Audacity. You can get a low cost recording interface for $20-$35, and a couple of far-better-than-what-you-have mics at any music store (or even Radio Shack, sometimes.. they had dynamics made for them by Shure a few years back) for $20-$30 each. Sure, not free, and also not going to get confused with real studio work, but a big improvement over what you have, and it'll give you at least the option of recording the bass separately.
