Need advice for Jazz Band for Bari Sax?

I've played saxophone since sixth grade. I am now a sophomore in high school and have evolved to baritone saxophone. I was invited to join my school's jazz band, so I have a few questions. What is a good, inexpensive reed to use? What bands/artists should I look up? Are there any books I should read to prepare myself for jazz band?

Orange box Rico reeds are the perfect starter reeds, and if your mouthpiece has a long table, the only reed you might ever want to use.
Since the baritone sax chair is oft referred to as the "anchorman" (apologies for the contrary gender reference- I did not invent the term), I recommend first listening to accomplished anchormen like Jack Washington (Count Basie), Harry Carney (Duke Ellington), Bill Perkins (Akiyoshi/Tabackin Big Band), and Joe Temperley (Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra). If you want to develop yourself as a soloist, start listening to the great solo voices like Serge Chaloff, Pepper Adams, Nick Brignola, and Gary Smulyan for starters. If your band director pulls some charts in a funky vein, check out Steve "the Doctor" Kupka from Tower of Power and Saturday Night Live alum Lew DelGatto, who recorded very often with the Brecker Brothers. Start learning to transcribe first with familiar melodies; as your skills develop, you can begin to transcribe the solos of others that knock your ears loose and practice them.
If you want to get a book to help you through jazz band, consider a copy of Mark Levine's "The Jazz Theory Book" to help you understand how chord changes and scale choices work. Books, however, are secondary to listening- listen to anyone that grabs your ears, but make a point of starting with Charlie Parker, Lester Young, or Louis Armstrong (listed in reverse chronological order).
