Do you have any pointers on how to write an intro to a novel?
I always struggle with the beginning. I can never seem to get that balance of action, detail, character development and exposition that a beginning requires.
Does anyone have any tips, or would it be better if I just wrote it and posted it to be critiqued?
1) Write the intro, or prologue, after you've written the entire book first. It makes it 1,000 times easier, I promise you.
2) Put all the best stuff at the beginning, even if the character has to have an unexplained, vague dream about future climaxes. The reason for this is that when you start sending out query letters to agencies or publishers, they usually only want them to be the first 2 pages of your book. Think about. Your entire book judged by the first two pages. They have to be good.
3) Really nail the character's personality down, and present the problem of the story that leads to the end. Give the reader a good idea about whether or not they want to continue reading.
