what is the best way to self teach the guitar?

my 8yr old son is obsessed with learning the guitar. i have finally agreed (after 3 years) and bought him an electric, with an amp. he will be having lessons with a friend, but i would like to be able to help him out if he gets stuck at home. i have ordered some very basic books. i did play the clarinet as a child and read music but i cant remember a thing lol. i now really regret it!
basically how do i teach myself???

There are loads of different ways. He is a little bit younger so a teacher/friend would be best, but they can also be boring for your son if its not the kind of music your son wants to play, so he might end up getting bored of guitar quite quickly. But he sems adamant to learn, so you should be alright! Just expect loud guitar noise for the rest of your existence lol

Books are alright up untill a point, but a book cant show you certan techniques, whereas a video can. So as someone said above, YouTube is a brilliant place to learn guitar.
There are some channels on YouTube dedicated to teaching guitar, and majority of them ar pretty good.

I started by I took a few lessons off a friend I knew, I asked alot of questions, then I just got some free guitar tabs off the internet, and played to the songs I liked. This may be good for your son when he has learnt the basic things about guitar, as when your playing to songs you like, it aways brings fun into playing guitar early on, cuz it can be quite a drag playing the same thing over and over again.

The tabs that I read arent consisted of musical notes that you may of learnt with the clarinet i.e like quavers (spelling, not the crisps lol) etc, they're just consisted of numbers which will mean which guitar fret (but I cant explain it in typing) This will make it alot easier for both you and your son to learn songs.
I cant really explain it in typing lol as I've probably confused you enough! so its best to ask someone to show you or type in a search on youtube about guitar fret explanation or something.

But as they say with learning any instrument, practise, practise, and more practise!
